Fuel and Hydration for a First Half Marathon

Rehearse the exact products, timing, and water plan that race day will use.

Plain answerMany first-time half-marathoners will be running long enough to benefit from a practiced fueling plan. The exact amount and timing are individual. Test the same product, dose, water pairing, and carrying method during long runs—never for the first time on race day.

Start with the race

Check what drink and gel the event supplies, where aid stations sit, and whether cups or refill stations are used. Decide whether to use course products or carry your own, then reproduce that choice in training.

SourceNutrition and Athletic Performance position statement
The joint professional position explains that carbohydrate and fluid strategies depend on exercise duration, intensity, environment, and individual tolerance.

Hydration is not a contest

Needs vary with sweat rate, weather, body size, pace, and acclimatization. Both inadequate and excessive fluid intake can cause problems. Use training and event conditions to build an individualized plan rather than forcing a universal cup count.

The guidance emphasizes individualized replacement and avoiding excessive dehydration or overdrinking.

Practice the mechanics

Opening a packet, swallowing while moving, taking water without coughing, and carrying waste are skills. Rehearse them at easy effort. Medical conditions, medication, diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, or pregnancy warrant qualified individual guidance.
