First Half-Marathon Race-Day Checklist

Bib, layers, transport, fuel, start position, and the decisions that should already be made.

Plain answerPrepare tested clothing and shoes, bib, charged devices, familiar breakfast, practiced fuel, transport, and event instructions the night before. Arrive early enough to solve toilets, bag drop, and start position without borrowing energy from the race.

Before leaving

  • Check current weather and select tested layers.
  • Eat and drink according to the rehearsed routine.
  • Carry identification, confirmation, personal medication, and required supplies.
  • Confirm road closures and the final route to the start.

At the venue

  • Find toilets, bag drop, aid information, and the correct corral.
  • Warm up only as practiced; first-timers rarely need to spend much distance.
  • Start near runners expecting a similar pace.
  • Review the mile-ten decision, not an exact fantasy finish time.

During the race

Settle through mile three, follow the practiced fuel and run/walk plan, and obey volunteers and course markings. Event-specific instructions outrank generic advice, including headphone, cup, and aid-station rules.
