First half marathon

How to Pace Your First Half Marathon

Settle early, protect miles four through ten, and decide what remains at mile ten.

Plain answerRun the opening three miles more calmly than the crowd suggests. Hold a repeatable effort through mile ten. Only then decide whether to increase effort. Your first half marathon should become difficult by choice, not by an accidental opening pace.

Miles 1–3: settle

Accept congestion and refuse to bank time. Breathing should be controlled, stride familiar, and any run/walk schedule should begin immediately.

Miles 4–10: save

Stop negotiating with the watch every few seconds. Hold the trained effort, take rehearsed fuel and water, and let faster early runners go. Halfway is a checkpoint, not a starting gun.

Final 3.1: spend

At mile ten, assess breathing, form, stomach, and course conditions. If the account has reserve, increase gradually. If it does not, maintain the plan instead of creating a collapse.

The pacing error: an opening pace that feels free because adrenaline temporarily hides its cost. The bill normally arrives after mile eight.
